On December 1, 2023, Dr. Yang Lin, an assistant professor at our university, invited Dr. Deng Lei, a senior researcher at Huawei's Theoretical Research Department, to visit the School of Intelligent Science and Technology at Nanjing University. Dr. Yang Lin gave an academic presentation on Universal Online Game Strategies to Dr. Deng and other teachers at our university. After the presentation, scholars had a heated academic discussion and exchange on the topic and the field.

Abstract:

The field of artificial intelligence is undergoing a profound transformation represented by large models. In addition to the related application fields of deep learning, its impact also extends to the research of machine learning, especially reinforcement learning and other related theories. This report explores the development prospects of machine learning theory and methods under the impact of large models. Based on my research on theoretical aspects such as online reinforcement learning, online optimization, and online sequential games, this paper explores the future development trends of machine learning. Through these explorations, we are committed to promoting the theoretical methods of machine learning and fully leveraging the advantages of agents in language understanding, semantic task decomposition, and inference, thereby promoting them as an organic component of the current universal agent framework.

Presenter:

Yang Lin is an Associate Professor, Distinguished Researcher, and Doctoral Supervisor at the School of Intelligent Science and Technology, Nanjing University. I studied under Professor Huang Yongcheng from the Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Before joining Nanjing University, I worked as a postdoctoral associate researcher in the Don Towsley research group at the University of Massachusetts and was awarded the Massachusetts CDS Postdoctoral Global Scholarship for two consecutive terms. His main research areas include online learning, online optimization, etc. He has published over 30 papers (including six ACM SIGMETRICS papers) in top conferences and journals in related fields, such as ACM SIGMETRICS and NeuroIPS.

Introduction by Dr. Deng Lei:

Senior Researcher at Huawei's Theoretical Research Department, obtained a Bachelor's degree from the Department of Information Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2012, a PhD from the Department of Information Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2017, and a Visiting Scholar at the School of Electronic and Computer Engineering at Purdue University in the United States in 2015. Before joining Huawei, he served as an assistant professor and specially appointed associate researcher at the School of Electronic and Information Engineering, Shenzhen University, and led the completion of a National Natural Science Foundation Youth Science Fund project. His current research interest is semantic encoding theory for the AI era. His research work has been published in top international academic conferences and journals such as IEEE INFOCOM, ToN, JSAC, etc., with a total of 40+academic papers published. At the same time, his theoretical research results have been successfully commercialized in Huawei's cloud, storage, optical and other product lines.
